Deep inside your brain are two small almond-shaped structures called the amygdalae (singular: amygdala).

The amygdala acts as your brain's emotional alarm system.

Its primary job is to detect potential danger and respond quickly.

When it identifies a threat, whether physical or psychological, it sends signals that activate your body's stress response.

Sometimes this happens before your conscious mind has fully understood what's going on.

This is why you might:

- Jump when you hear a loud noise. - Feel your heart race before giving a presentation. - Become anxious after reading a difficult email. - Feel instantly defensive during conflict.

The amygdala is trying to keep you safe.

Cortisol: Your Body's Long-Term Stress Hormone

Once the amygdala detects a threat, it communicates with the hypothalamus, which activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, one of the body's main stress response systems.

This process leads to the release of cortisol, often called the body's primary stress hormone.

Cortisol isn't "bad."

It plays many important roles, including helping to:

- Increase available energy. - Regulate blood sugar. - Reduce inflammation in the short term. - Maintain blood pressure. - Support the body's response to stress.

During brief stressful situations, cortisol is incredibly helpful.

Problems arise when cortisol remains elevated for long periods without enough recovery.

What Happens During Chronic Stress?

When your brain constantly perceives danger, your stress response remains switched on.

Instead of returning to a calm, balanced state, your nervous system continues preparing for threats that may never arrive.

Over time, prolonged stress can affect several important brain functions.

During periods of chronic stress, the brain temporarily shifts resources away from the prefrontal cortex and prioritises faster survival responses.

How Stress Affects Memory

Another important brain region affected by prolonged stress is the hippocampus, which plays a central role in learning and memory.

Research suggests that ongoing exposure to elevated cortisol may interfere with the hippocampus' ability to form and retrieve memories effectively.

This may explain why stress can lead to:

- Forgetting appointments. - Losing your train of thought. - Difficulty learning new information. - Brain fog. - Misplacing everyday items.

The encouraging news is that the brain remains remarkably adaptable throughout life.

Reducing chronic stress and creating opportunities for recovery can support improved cognitive functioning over time.

Your Nervous System Is Always Listening

Your nervous system continuously gathers information from both your external environment and your internal experiences.

It asks one fundamental question:

> "Am I safe?"

When the answer is "yes," your body is more likely to enter a state associated with rest, digestion, recovery and social connection.

When the answer is "no," your body prepares for action.

If your nervous system rarely experiences moments of safety, even everyday situations may begin to feel overwhelming.

This is one reason why recovery involves more than simply taking time off work, it also involves helping your nervous system experience safety again.

Signs Your Stress Response May Be Overactive

You may notice:

- Feeling constantly "on edge." - Difficulty relaxing. - Overthinking. - Irritability. - Emotional exhaustion. - Sleep difficulties. - Feeling overwhelmed by small tasks. - Frequent headaches or muscle tension. - Increased anxiety. - Trouble concentrating.

While you can't eliminate every source of stress, you can support your brain's ability to recover.

Sleep is one of the brain's most important recovery processes.

It supports memory, emotional regulation and learning.

Gentle physical activity helps regulate stress hormones and supports healthy brain function.

This doesn't have to mean intense exercise.

Walking, stretching or yoga can all be beneficial.

**Create moments of psychological safety**

Your nervous system benefits from experiences that communicate safety.

Examples include:

- Spending time in nature. - Connecting with supportive people. - Practising slow breathing. - Listening to calming music. - Engaging in meaningful hobbies.

**Reduce unnecessary multitasking**

Your brain performs best when it can focus on one meaningful task at a time.

Frequent task switching increases cognitive load and mental fatigue.

**Make time for reflection**

Journaling and guided reflection help organise thoughts, process emotions and increase self-awareness.

Naming your experiences often reduces their emotional intensity and makes them easier to navigate.
